Bug in getPowerDeriv.m

Dear all, There is a bug in getPowerDeriv. In rare cases such as entering x^(alppha-1) with x=0 in steady state and alpha=2 the derivative is wrong. The reason is that the first condition in getPowerDeriv checks whether x=0 and then sets the derivative to 0 as the derivative is p*0^(p-1) which is 0 if p~=1. But this is wrong if the exponent is p=1 as it then is 1*0^0=1. I pushed a fix to git where the first condition checks whether p=1. This also affects the 4.2 branch. Dear all, There is a bug in 4.2.5 relating to simk.m. Ticket 143 aims at replacing simk.m, hence I did not push the fix to 4.2 branch. If you think fixing simk.m in the source is needed you can do that with the one linked to from KnownBugs-Wiki. However in the current Dynare source the purely forward-looking model from the forum, which runs in 4.2.5 with the fix to simk.m, crashes with an error related to a missing eigval-field in dr. I suggest that we add the attached mod-file as a unit test. My guess is that this is a bug and the treatment of noconstant and prefilter is not consistent. Moreover, I am not sure why we save atT to the results eval(['oo_.SmoothedVariables.' deblank(M_.endo_names(i1,:)) ' = atT(i,:)'';']); but plot yf, which is a transformation of atT. Bug in estimation/identification

Dear all, there is a serious issue in both the current snapshot and Dynare 4.2.5 when the covariance matrix of the structural errors is not diagonal. I attached a mod-file showing the issue. The situation is as follows: The model specifies a correlation between two shocks using shocks; var e_g; stderr 1; var e_R; stderr 1; corr e_R, e_g = 0.5; end; The preprocessor then sets M_.Sigma_e to [1 0.5; 0.5 1]. In a next step, I want to estimate the standard errors of e_R and e_g estimated_params; stderr e_R, inv_gamma_pdf, 0.01, inf; stderr e_g, inv_gamma_pdf, 0.01, inf; end; The problem is that I wanted to specify a predefined correlation between the two shocks. However, when the estimation updates the standard deviation of the shocks only the diagonal is updated, but not the off-diagonal elements, which stay at 0.5. As a result M_.Sigma_e becomes [0.01^2 0.5; 0.5 0.01^2] when the prior mean is used as initial values for estimation. But given a correlation of 0.5 it should be [0.01^2 0.5*0.01^2; 0.5*0.01^2 0.01^2] The reason is that the preprocessor sees no need for updating the off-diagonal and sets estim_params_.corrx0[]. Hence, in set_all_parameters.m the covariances are not set. This bug is the reason the attached mod-file crashes with a warning that the SS-matrix is not positive definite when you comment out the "corr..."-statement in estimated_params that leads to the crash in identification. The same problem also occurs if I use "var e_R, e_g = 0.5*1*1;" instead of "corr e_R, e_g=0.5". I am not sure what is the best level to fix this bug as it both involves the estimation routines as the preprocessor. Hello, It seems as though it would be good to discuss the evaluation rules for the Dynare 5 language on the list before going too far with the prototype. To animate this discussion, a simple series of commands in the new language would be useful: a <- 1; b <- a + 1; a <- 2; model { endogenous c; ... equations { b = c*...; ... } } Basically, we need to determine how to evaluate b in this situation: 1) In the statement, b <- a + 1;, should b be evaluated to hold the value 2 or should it hold the symbolic value "a + 1"? 1a) If the answer is 2, should we allow for symbolic storage as well? I.e., the user could write something of the form: b <- sym(a) + 1; if they wanted to store the symbolic value "a + 1"? 1b) If the answer is "a + 1", should we allow for some type of forced evaluation notion to make b take the value 2? I.e., something of the form b <- eval(a) + 1;? NB: We could replace sym and eval by whatever we wanted (some languages use a preceding $ sign or quote). The idea here is mainly to decide the functionality we want to support (i.e. both 1a and 1b or just one or the other) as well as the default functionality (either 1a or 1b), but if people have strong preferences for/against a certain delimiter, they should be stated. 2) In model-related blocks (model, calibration, initval, etc), should b in this case evaluate to 2, "a+1" or 3? 2a) If 2, this means that 1a from above holds 2b) If "a+1" this means that 1b from above holds 2c) If 3, this means that 1b from above holds but that, in model-type blocks, programming variables are evaluated by default (ie, b has the value "a+1" until it is used, at which point the last available value of a is looked up, in this case 2, and b is evaluated giving 3) NB: as above, we need to decide what the default behavior will be, whether or not we will enable all behaviors listed or others I missed, and, if enabling all behaviors, what delimiters we will use to do so (e.g. $, ', eval(), etc) 3) Finally, we must decide whether to support model variable names that overlap with programming variable names. For example, in this case, would it be ok to have endogenous a; or endogenous b;? Maybe it will lead to bugs in people's code to have this option. At the same time, since we're asking users to keep track of different types of variables in their mod files (i.e. programming variables versus model variables) as well as the scope of those variables (for loops for example) it seems quite natural to support this feature.
