license statement in Matlab

Hi All, There seems to be a bit of confusion with the license command in Matlab. It seems that both license('test',toolbox) and license('inuse',toolbox) do not work the way we want. Originally, we were using license('test',toolbox) to see if a user was licensed to use a certain toolbox. The problem with this is, however, that it does not test to see if the toolbox is actually installed. Though most people will have all toolboxes installed that they are licensed to use, this may not always be the case (for example when running a system-wide version of Matlab on a shared server). In commit 99292c7601778ceb81134a38cda8c0c134e9f76c, this was changed to use isempty(license('inuse',toolbox)), which tests to see that an toolbox is in use (i.e. checked out) by the current Matlab session. This will return true if you have already made a call to a function from a toolbox in the current Matlab session, but false otherwise (even if you have the toolbox installed and are licensed to use it). You can see this by opening a new Matlab session, then issuing the following commands: isempty(license('inuse','optimization_toolbox')) fsolve isempty(license('inuse','optimization_toolbox')) The result of the first call to license will be 0 while the second call will return 1. The proposed solution is to use license('checkout',toolbox), which would actually try to checkout a toolbox. However, before we push yet another change regarding the license command, we wanted to make sure this would work for everyone. Specifically, it seems that Marco had a problem with the original solution and George has a problem with the current solution. So, it would help us out if at least Marco and George could replace the problematic code with that below and tell us if it works for them: [has_X_toolbox ~] = license('checkout','X_toolbox'); if has_X_toolbox ... When we calculate the RMSEs (using FilteredVariablesKStepAhead), there are huge differences in some variables between 4.2.4 and an older version (1 quarter ahead RMSE for BLT_EU comes out to be 400 instead of 14). Dear Dynare users, We are pleased to announce the release of Dynare 4.2.4. This is a bugfix release. It comes only a few days after the previous release, because version 4.2.3 was affected by a critical bug (see below). The Windows package for the new release is already available for download at the official Dynare website <http://www.dynare.org>. The Mac and Linux packages should follow soon. All users are strongly encouraged to upgrade, especially those who have installed the buggy 4.2.3 release. Dear Dynare users, We are pleased to announce the release of Dynare 4.2.3. This is a bugfix release. The Windows package is already available for download at the official Dynare website <http://www.dynare.org>. The Mac and Linux packages should follow soon. All users are strongly encouraged to upgrade. This release is compatible with MATLAB versions ranging from 7.0 (R14) to 7.13 (R2011b) and with GNU Octave versions ranging from 3.0 to 3.4. Here is a non-exhaustive list of the problems identified in version 4.2.2 and that have been fixed in version 4.2.3: * `steady_state_model' was broken for lags higher than 2 * `simult_.m' was not working correctly with `order=3' if `k_order_solver' had not been explicitly specified * `stoch_simul' with `order=3' and without `periods' option was reporting dummy theoretical moments * Under Octave, option `solve_algo=0' was causing crashes in `check' and `stoch_simul' * Identification module was broken * The test for singularity in the model reporting eigenvalues close to 0/0 was sometimes reporting false positives * The `conditional_variance_decomposition' option was not working if one period index was 0. Super! We have greatly diminished the number of failures on the tests. I tried to see why gsa/ls2003.mod was failing under Octave but can't understand. The test works when dynare is called interactively, but fails when called via run_test_octave.m. It looks as if the interaction of try and global estim_params_ is creating a problem in this case. It would be great if somebody finds out what is going on. Best Michel

Strange behavior in IRFs

I am puzzled by the problem reported by the first poster in this thread: http://www.dynare.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2829 I am able to reproduce the problem at 2nd and 3rd order, but not at 1st. At 2nd order, given the decision rules, is it clear that for a shock to "eta", if "e" is maintained to zero, then "a" should remain constant. However it is not what happens in the IRF graphs: "a" moves, by a not so small amount. Is this a bug in the IRF generation code, or am I missing something obvious? Dear Sebastien, I have committed the fix for testsuite to skip the mapping routines which are external from the official dynare. Still, GSA keep crashing because prior_posterior_statistics is broken. All the best, Michel Dear Michel, My coauthor and I have derived a perturbation solution using the nonlinear version of the infinite MA as an alternative to the standard state-space policy function that I thought might interest you. I have taken the liberty of attaching it to this email. In brief, we find that taking the nonlinear MA approach yields stationary solutions (i.e., endogenously 'prunes') for simulations, decomposes nonlinear impulse responses into contributing elements from the underlying kernels of different orders (nicely illustrating the uncertainty component of responses to volatility shocks), and relates several invertibility assumptions of state-space solutions to more interpretable assumptions on the first order fundamental equation. We've programmed it all up as an add on to Dynare (just need to add one line after stoch_simul) and I've attached the routines here. Of particular interest perhaps is the third-order `pruning' algorithm. We would, of course, be thankful for any comments or suggestions you might have and are, in any case, grateful for your time. problem with *_steadystate.m file

Recent changes to resol.m, passing structure M_ as an argument, breaks *_steadystate.m files when they modify the value of a parameter. Before the modification was sent to the calling program via global M_, but if this variable is now local to the calling program the modification of the parameter is just ignored by the computing chain (until the next top level instruction: stoch_simul, check, estimation , ....). Dealing with global variables is detrimental to efficiency and can cause, as in this case, hard to see side effects. So, it is a good thing to eliminate global variables from resol.m On the other hand, it is highly desirable to keep backward compatibility with existing *_steadystate.m file, otherwise, we will spend a huge amount of time explaining user why their program don't work anymore or, worst, why it doesn't give the same result as with the previous Dynare version and that the new result is wrong. In any case, using a steady_state_model block within the *.mod file is superior because handling of variables and parameters indices is much more efficient. Furthermore, almost all desirable syntax is now supported by steady_state_model block, even calling a nonlinear solver for a small set of equations (those still have to be written in a separate *.m file). I propose the following: 1) change the name of the *.m file created by steady_state_model from <fname>_steadystate.m to <fname>_steadystate1.m 2) send back params as an output argument of <fname>_steadystate2.m (in a second step, we can to the preprocessor the necessary code to recognize whether params has changed or not) 3) when the old <fname>_steadystate.m file is called, add a call to evalin(M_.params) to bring back the global variable. 4) Use options_.steadystate_flag to distinguish when to call <fname>_steadystate.m and <fname>_steadystate2.m. The new function <fname>_steadystate2.m takes precedence. 4) Factorize the evaluation of the steady-state in a separate Matlab function and call this new function when necessary. I have started and shall finish soon. 5) I have also started to write a "Howto compute steady-state" and will accelerate this project. 6) I will discuss with Ferhat the implication for blocks and bytecode Tell me what you think Best Michel

Estimation broken

I am importing new versions of the estimation routines from one of my private branch which have diverged from master. I try to fix this as soon as possible... Hi Houtan, Yes. I changed the order of the outputs from the kronecker mex files because I don't want to have the error code as the first output argument. This complicates considerably the calls to these routines (we have in some situations to create a lot of temporary variables) and makes the code more difficult to read. Obviously I had to remove the test on the number of output arguments... I tested all these changes and I didn't see any problems. Yes. I introduced inconsistencies in the treatment of the error codes. I think we should change all the mex files... But we have time to discuss this. In my view, the reversed ordering of the outputs is preferable if we have to call a large number of times the mex routines. Best, Stéphane. EXPECTATION operator with partial information in Dynare

Hi George, Some time ago, we implemented a syntax like that in Dynare: EXPECTATION(full)(SOME_VARIABLE) EXPECTATION(varobs)(SOME_VARIABLE) The idea was that you could, in the same model, variables known with the full information set, and variables known with the partial set. To my knowledge, this syntax is recognized by the preprocessor, auxiliary variables are created, but then it crashes because there are not as many variables than equations. So basically this thing seems broken. Has it ever worked? Have you plans to make it work? Many users were confused because on some runs, the example were failing because the hessian at the mode was not definite positive. As a quick fix, the mode_compute option was changed to 6 in 4ec5016e5fed4d51e4ac987c1e8f4bcc85f3148f and 7b59c012b992387c2cc11ab5dd5a8175051cce79. The problem is that the examples are now a lot slower than before. Salut Michel, Je t’écris au sujet de ton commit cd1d6ae25355cbb449a6e447cc513314d9205ae0, qui rajoute la valeur "prior" à l’option "mode_compute". Je voulais rajouter cette option dans le manuel de référence et sur la page wiki NewFeatures, mais je ne suis pas sûr de totalement comprendre ce qu’elle fait. Je comprends que la variance de la jump proposal est initialisée à la matrice de variance-covariance du prior. Ce que je ne comprends pas c’est quelle valeur des paramètres sera utilisée pour initialiser le metropolis. C’est la valeur de "xparam1", qui est initialisé dans set_prior.m, et je ne vois pas à première vue quelle est la valeur initiale; ça ne semble pas être le prior mean ou mode (qui soit dit en passant l’objet d’une option spécifique et non documentée dans set_prior.m). Par ailleurs quelle est la valeur retournée dans les champs M_.params et oo_.posterior_mode.* ? Il n'y a pas d'exemple (j'ai essayé avec example1.mod)... Le problème est évident car dans le code on passe systématique dr.ys comme condition initiale. J'imagine que dans ce cas il suffit de passer la première colonne de oo_.endo_simul. Mais il faudrait un flag pour signaler que le bloc histval est employé et il faudrait que le préprocesseur ne sorte pas en crashant... Je réponds donc sur le forum qu'il s'agit d'un bug de dynare... Pour le second point on verra plus tard. J'ai commencé à écrire une classe time series compatible avec octave... Il faut prévoir quelque chose pour ça. à+ Stéphane. Hi Sébastien, Slicot library is still not used in the estimation dll... I downloaded succesfully the version 5 of Slicot this morning (currently Dynare distributes version 4). On Slicot's web site the library is still presented under a Gnu GPL licence. I will contact the authors next week to see if they plan to change the licence... Yesterday you told me that it was not possible to change a GPL licence, because anyone can fork... So I guess that it is not an issue if we distribute old versions of Slicot, even if they choose another licence for the next versions (>5).
