Next (and last?) release in the 4.3 series

I plan to release Dynare 4.3.3 by the end of this week or beginning of next week. In addition to the usual bug fixes, it will add support for MATLAB R2013a. This will probably be the last release in the 4.3 series. I have uploaded a release candidate there: http://www.dynare.org/sebastien/dynare-4.3.3-rc1-win.exe http://www.dynare.org/sebastien/dynare-4.3.3-rc1.tar.xz Please test it. Just to inform you that I have uploaded to the Dynare website a new Windows binary for Octave version 3.6.4 [1]. This binary is compatible with Windows 8. I also updated and simplified the build instructions for Windows on the wiki [2]. You’ll need to download and reinstall the new ZIP files attached to the wiki page. Bug in estimation

Dear all, I think I found a serious bug in estimation which I think could potentially lead to delivering wrong results. It looks as if both the 4.3 and Master branches are affected. Dynare 4.2.5 is clean as this bug was introduced when we fixed > “When running estimation or identification on models with non-diagonal > structural error covariance matrices while not simultaneously > estimating the correlation between shocks (i.e. calibrating the > correlation) Dynare handles the off-diagonal elements incorrectly or > crashes” The issue is the following: As soon as you estimate a correlation in the covariance matrix, the updating in set_all_parameters was not completely based on the most recent parameter draw. Instead, we used a mixture of the old and new correlation. In the old code we have after updating the variances in Sigma_e based on the current draw the following if ~isempty(M.Correlation_matrix) Sigma_e = diag(sqrt(diag(Sigma_e)))*M.Correlation_matrix*diag(sqrt(diag(Sigma_e))); end Note that this is the Correlation matrix of the last draw. If correlations are estimated, we next update the correlation matrix and Sigma_e. But when doing so, we make use of the Sigma_e just updated based on the old correlation matrix. if ncx corrx = estim_params.corrx; for i=1:ncx k1 = corrx(i,1); k2 = corrx(i,2); M.Correlation_matrix(k1,k2) = xparam1(i+offset); M.Correlation_matrix(k2,k1) = M.Correlation_matrix(k1,k2); Sigma_e(k1,k2) = xparam1(i+offset)*sqrt(Sigma_e(k1,k1)*Sigma_e(k2,k2)); Sigma_e(k2,k1) = Sigma_e(k1,k2); end end If the changes in the correlation are small, the difference might be negligible. Thus, it is hard to tell how serious this is. Nevertheless, if you share my assessment, I think we should issue a fixed version 4.3.3 as soon as possible. The solution is simply to check whether ncx is not 0 and only update then. I pushed a fix for this and several other bugs encountered when fixing this. Question regarding exo-lead substitution

Dear Michel and Sébastien, currently Dynare substitutes exogenous lags and leads and adds equations. In the attached mod-file (ignore the complex parameter values which are the true problem for now), there are 12 endogenous variables. The preprocessor now says Substitution of exo leads: added 3 auxiliary variables and equations. Running model_diagnostics delivers: model_diagnostic: the Jacobian of the static model is singular there is 1 colinear relationships between the variables and the equations Colinear variables: c k y l mc R w pi Colinear equations 8 14 But originally, there are only 12 equations. Is there a certain rule where the auxiliary equations are included? Are they simply appended at the end so that I know to focus on equation 8 in this case? And how can I tell to which original exogenous variable equation 14 refers to? If there is no easy answer to those two questions, I would suggest to - add the name of the original substituted variable as a field in M_.aux_vars, which together with the type stored there should be sufficient for full identification. - Add the information about where the equations are appended to the Wiki (http://www.dynare.org/DynareWiki/AuxiliaryVariables) Moreover, regarding the Wiki: could it be that there is a typo and it should be Aux var for endogenous with lag >= 1 instead of >=2 (and the same for endogenous leads)? Currently, identification only prints out the error code from info, but does not display the explicit error message of print_info. What do you think about making this more explicit? 2. I dont know if there is a way to avoid the problem and continue to run identification. I tried moving the identification command before the estimated_params-block in order for prior_exist to be set to 0 (line 102-109). However, then identification crashes in line 130 with ??? Dear Dynare friends, The Dynare Summer School 2013 will take place from June 24 to June 28, 2013 in Paris, France. GOALS OF THE SUMMER SCHOOL The school will provide an introduction to Dynare and to Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) modeling. The courses will focus on simulation and estimation of DSGE models with Dynare. It will be also the occasion to introduce the new features in Dynare 4.4 (to be released before the Summer School). Tao Zha (Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta) will be the guest speaker, and will present the Markov-Switching tools in Dynare. This Summer school is aimed at beginners as well as at more experienced researchers. PhD students are encouraged to participate. Dear all, the attached mod-file (a potential unit test) crashes with Reference to non-existent field 'm'. Error in shock_decomposition (line 82) z(i,end,:) = eval(['oo.SmoothedVariables.' M_.endo_names(i,:)]); Error in fs2000_smoother_selected_vars (line 211) oo_ = shock_decomposition(M_,oo_,options_,var_list_); The reason is that a var_list-command is passed to the file, but now there exists no previous smoother result from the estimation command from which to take the results for the other variables. I am not sure if this hints at a deeper issue in that users might have changed parameters for which to now compute the smoother, but shock_decomposition still accesses results from a previous run of estimation. Moving Dynare to GitHub ?

Hi, I have create a Dynare repository on GitHub: https://github.com/DynareTeam/dynare As you may know, GitHub has become the most popular platform for collaborative development of free software. It is user friendly and makes contributions very easy via a “Pull request” mechanism. It is also possible to add comments to specific commits (before or after they are merged), so reviewing is made easy. Do you think it would be a good decision to decide that the main Dynare repository is the GitHub one? On the upside, I think this could attract new contributors by lowering the barrier to entry. On the downside, it means that we lose control of our hosting architecture (though we would maintain a mirror on Kirikou at the address where the main repository currently is). We could also move the Trac tickets to the GitHub “issues” system. There is also a Wiki on GitHub, but I think we should rather keep our existing wiki. Stéphane and Michel: I have already granted you push/pull access to the repository, using your respective GitHub accounts (stepan-a, MichelJuillard). Dear Sebastien, When trying to use the use_dll-option with Dynare 4.3.0 or .2 (Windows 7 64 with Visual Studio 2010), I get the following error message: LINK : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol Dynamic C:\Users\Johannes\AppData\Local\Temp\mex_yBgjEV\templib.x : fatal error LNK1120: 1 unresolved externals C:\PROGRA~1\MATLAB\R2011A\BIN\MEX.PL: Error: Link of 'example1_static.mexw64' failed. ??? Error using ==> mex at 208 Unable to complete successfully. Error in ==> example1 at 66 eval('mex -O LINKFLAGS="$LINKFLAGS /export:Dynamic" example1_static.c example1_static_mex.c') Error in ==> dynare at 120 evalin('base',fname) ; 4.2.5 runs on the same machine with use_dll. As far as I understand it from the manual, forecast always starts at the steady state. After estimation, it thus starts at the steady state of the posterior mode? Or does it start at the smoothed/filtered values for the last period`? In contrast, conditional_forecast "computes forecasts on an estimated model for a given constrained path of some future endogenous variables." But what is the starting point?
