Is it intended that loading data from mat-files in master only works if they are column vectors and not row vectors? dseries class

Dear Marco, I am working on the integration of the dseries class in dynare and I have a question related to your codes. My commits are in a personal repository: git.ithaca.fr/dynare/src/use-dseries The main change is that dataset_ is now a dseries object (instead of a structure) and I added another structure dataset_info to store descriptive statistics and informations related to the missing informations. I think I have no problem with respect to the parallel stuff or gsa, but I miss something in the routines related to identification. In dynare_identification.m, starting line 133 you do something if dataset_ is empty. I didn't figure out yet how to handle this, but could you explain what you are doing in this case ? Is the identification thing working without data ? Also in identification_routine.m (line 144) you put simulated data in the data_info (dataset_) structure if init==1, but I don't understand why you need that. Dear all, There seems to be a bug in dsge_likelihood.m that occurs when calling estimation after identification. In the attached mod-file in dsge_likelihood.m we have in lines 628 following: if analytic_derivation==1, analytic_deriv_info={analytic_derivation,DT,DYss,DOm,DH,DP,asy_Hess}; else analytic_deriv_info={analytic_derivation,DT,DYss,DOm,DH,DP,D2T,D2Yss,D2Om,D2 H,D2P}; clear DT DYss DOm DH DP D2T D2Yss D2Om D2H D2P, end that is if analytic_derivation==2 set by identification we delete DH. But in line 714 we access DH, which was deleted. if analytic_derivation, for j=1:pp, tmp(j,:)=DH(j,j,:); end DH=tmp; end It seems we have to account for this case. Hi Houtan, For me this is not a bug, but we may want to change this behaviour. In your example, isequal returns 0 because of the NaNs in ts3 and ts4: a NaN is not equal to a NaN. We may instead compare only the non NaN elements of the dseries objects... Best, Stéphane. Change in deterministic shocks

Hi, Since commit 82b311569, temporary deterministic shocks are now initialized differently. Their value is now set in make_ex_.m, while previously their value was directly set into oo_.exo_simul by the preprocessor. Also, make_ex_.m now unconditionally recreates oo_.exo_simul. Previously it was only recreating it if the variable was nonexistent. This change should fix various ugly problems and bugs that we had with temporary shocks. Please however check that it does not break anything. Now that we are introducing the multinomial statement that refers to a particular statistical process, I would add 'markov_chain' as an alias for the 'markov_switching' statement, because 'markov_switching' simply defines the Markov Chain process. mh_, mcmc_, or drop them both

Hi all, Following a discussion regarding option names that we had here on Friday and then again by mail on Monday, we wanted to open it to further input as there was disagreement between the few of us that are at Chevaleret. On Friday, we discussed renaming the options that begin with mh_ to begin with mcmc_. Basically, we want to deprecate the mh_ options all the while supporting them for backwards compatibility. We are all in agreement about this and hence opened ticket #644. On Monday, I had the idea to simply drop mcmc_ completely. In other words, mcmc_replic and mcmc_drop would become, more simply, replic and drop. In the preprocessor we would create rules that would store these in an options_.mcmc substructure, such as options_.mcmc.replic and options_.mcmc.drop. I spoke with Sebastien about this and his preference is not to make this change, the argument being that 1) by keeping the mcmc_ prefix, it’s more clear to the user what the options mean and 2) that in Dynare, currently, options are global and hence this changes the default behavior as the “replic” option in stoch_simul would not be global with the “replic” option in estimation (i.e., there are two different rules in the preprocessor that match “replic”, depending on which command it is passed to). With regards to 1), my view was that the options are understood within the context of the command they’re passed to and though the mcmc_ prefix makes it explicit, it’s not ultimately necessary as people get option names and their meanings from the manual. Further, with respect to 2), it seems that Dynare is in the process of transitioning towards non-global options; this has already happened with ms-sbvar, and is happening with estimation, so this change would be along the lines of making that transition. Via email on Monday, Stephane agreed with my point of view. Hence, Sebastien wanted to open the discussion to more input so we can come to a final decision about this. Best, Houtan

Trust-region nonlinear solver

Hi, I just added a new nonlinear solver for the steady command: it is a trust-region solver, available under solve_algo=4 (it replaces the old value of that option, which was a Newton without the correction for singular Jacobian; I had added that variant a long time ago, and it was neither really useful nor theoretically grounded). The implementation of the solver is essentially the fsolve.m from Octave, that I have adapted for MATLAB compatibility and that I have also slightly simplified. I am wondering whether we may want to use this new solver as the default, since trust-region algorithms are nowadays considered to be the state of the art for solving systems of nonlinear equations. Said otherwise, should we modify the default to be solve_algo=4 instead of solve_algo=2 ? Since I have not thoroughly tested the new solver, a first step would probably to test it on various relevant examples. NumberOfDraws relates only to the draws within each block (the maximum index allowed for each chain). But sub_draws are the draws across all chains. Dear Dynare friends, We are pleased to announce the release of Dynare 4.4.2. This is a bugfix release. The Windows packages are already available for download at: http://www.dynare.org/download/dynare-stable The Mac and GNU/Linux packages (for Debian and Ubuntu LTS) should follow soon. This release is compatible with MATLAB versions 7.3 (R2006b) to 8.2 (R2013b) and with GNU Octave versions 3.6 to 3.8. Here is a list of the problems identified in version 4.4.1 and that have been fixed in version 4.4.2: - Geweke convergence diagnostics was computed on the wrong sample if `mh_drop' was not equal to the default of 0.5. - The confidence level for computations in `estimation' (`conf_sig') could not be changed and was fixed at 0.9. - The `loglinear' option of `stoch_simul' was displaying the steady state of the original values, not the logged ones, and was producing incorrect simulations and simulated moments. Theoretical moments were unaffected. - The `optim' option of `estimation (for setting options to `mode_compute') was only working with at least MATLAB 8.1 (R2013a) or Octave 3.8. - For unit root models, theoretical HP filtered moments were sometimes erroneously displayed as NaN. - Specifying an endogenous variable twice after the `estimation' command would lead to a crash in the computation of moments. - Deterministic simulations were crashing on some models with more than one lead or one lag on exogenous variables. - Homotopy in stochastic extended path with order greater than 0 was not working correctly (during the homotopy steps the perfect foresight model solver was called instead of the stochastic perfect foresight model solver). - MCMC convergence diagnostics were not computed if `mh_replic' was less than 2000; the test now relies on the total number of iterations (this only makes a difference if option `load_mh_file' is used). So I do not know if we follow the methodology described by Durbin and Koopman (kalman filters with missing observations were implemented in Dynare in 2010 or even before I do not remember, and there is an old literature about this problem). Adding NaNs in the datafile is not the whole story if you want to mix frequencies. You also need to adapt the model. For instance, if your model is quaterly but you also have yearly observed data, you need to add an equation to relate the yearly data to the quaterly variables (except if the yearly variable is a stock which is not the case in general). More generally you need to write the model in the highest frequency and add measurement equations in order link the variables with different frequencies. Best, Stéphane. Thanks Johannes, it seems that deterministic models with several leads and lags and various combinations of initval, histval and endval have never been properly tested. In addition, since the addition of histval, the meaning of endval has become ambiguous. Dear all, the preprocessor currently allows setting ```constant``` and ```noconstant```-options (although they are not fully documented yet). But in ```dynare_estimation_init.m``` any such setting is automatically overwritten by: if all(abs(oo_.steady_state(bayestopt_.mfys))<1e-9) options_.noconstant = 1; else options_.noconstant = 0; end I don't really see the point of keeping the option. Rather the user should specify a correct observation equation. In that case, the current treatment should assure correct results. Best, Johannes

Upgrading MATLAB requirement to R2007b?

Dynare 4.4 (and unstable) currently require MATLAB >= 7.3 (R2006b), which means that we support MATLAB versions less than 7 years old. I would like to raise the requirement in unstable (and therefore for 4.5) to MATLAB >= 7.5 (R2007b). That would save us various tweaks in the build system, packaging and in the compatibility code. Also, assuming that we release 4.5 one year after 4.4, that means that we would maintain the policy of supporting MATLAB versions less than 7 years old. Dealing with GitHub issues

Hi, I am getting concerned about the number of outstanding GitHub issues against Dynare. As of now, there are 133 outstanding issues, and this number is following an upward trend. I think that having the number of issues growing too big has a negative impact, because it makes it more difficult to figure out what are the really relevant issues and act on them. It also diminishes the perceived usefulness of filing an issue, since there is a significant probability that there will be no follow up. I am therefore wondering what would be the possible solutions to bring down the number of opened issues. I can see at least: 1. Have developers deal more diligently with issues that are assigned to them (or otherwise mark them as unassigned) 2. Have developers pick up more unassigned issues 3. Hold meetings (as we did last year on IRC) to discuss issues for which a collective decision is needed 4. Acknowledge that we do not have enough resources to deal with some issues, and close them (this probably also needs collective decisions) 5. Organize bug squashing parties Obviously items 1 and 2 are not something that we can decide as a group, but I included them for completeness and as a reminder for everyone.
